JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A Jonesboro police officer recently decided his K9 partner of more than three years needed some extra protection.

So, he went to work trying to get him some new gear.

Officer Erik Johnson applied for a grant with Vested Interest in K9s.

Johnson was awarded the grant and now Gabo has a protective vest that is both bullet and stab proof.

"I read stories of K9s being attacked while they're protecting their handler or apprehending suspects," Officer Johnson said. "So far this year we've had eight K9s in the nation that have died due to assaults."

Gabo is nationally and state certified in patrol, narcotics and tracking.
