JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A new hotel, restaurant and convention center will be built on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.

Bill Smith, marketing director for A-State, says the Board of Trustees approved a resolution Friday to allow O'Reilly Hospitality Management, LLC to build the new facilities on the site of the former track and field program.

The university will lease the property to O’Reilly for 50 years with an option to renew for an additional 40 years.

The ground lease agreement allows for the construction of an Embassy Suites Hotel; a convention center, and a Houlihan’s Restaurant and Bar.

Tim O'Reilly told Region 8 News the total project is estimated to cost around $50 million.

The convention center is scheduled to open in 2018.

The new construction, according to Smith, will allow Jonesboro students the opportunity to work at the complex while completing a hospitality management degree program.

The measure passed by a 3-2 vote.
