PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - Paragould Public Works started using an automated trash pickup for the city Tuesday.
The department has been working on making the switch over the past few months.
For years, residents in Paragould put trash bags on the curb to be picked up twice a week.
Now, the citizens have trashcans that will be emptied once a week.
Some residents in Paragould told Region 8 News they like the new trash system because it keeps animals and weather from spreading trash all over the streets.
Lenny Edgar, director of public works, said the department likes the change because it cuts down on the amount of workers compensation claims.
The sanitation department had to deliver the trashcans to residents and purchased three new automated trucks.
Trash routes have also changed during the process.
Edgar said the department will use Monday as a service day and pick trashcans up Tuesday through Friday.
The department did not have to cut any jobs during the switch, but Edgar said a few workers were moved into different roles.
Edgar said the switch went pleasantly well Tuesday.
"It has been pretty good, I mean we are getting a lot of calls because some people don't have their cans and some people don't know what day is their pick up so that is what most of the calls are about not actually any complaints yet," Edgar said.
There are still a few issues to be worked out and more trash cans to be delivered, so the department asks residents to be patient in the meantime.
"Please have everybody be patient with us, this is new to us too but we will get it eventually," Edgar said.
If anyone has any questions regarding the new pick up dates or a trash can they can call the department directly at 870-239-7520.
