JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - There is a change of plans for the Jonesboro Police Department's new firing range. Interest from a state agency could mean a much larger facility.

The city swapped property with City Water and Light last year to put a public/private firing range on Dan Avenue.

Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott said they were just about to start dirt work on the property when the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said they wanted in on it.

However, the AGFC had bigger ideas for the facility.

Elliott said they're now on the hunt for land that will accommodate it.

"I think with a facility the size that we're looking at, we would draw people in from probably other states also and that would bring in some tournaments," Elliot said. "So, it would potentially have a large economic impact for Jonesboro and Northeast Arkansas."

Elliott said they did consider a piece of land off of Parker Road, but strong opposition from people in a nearby neighborhood caused them to drop those plans.

He said they are looking for approximately 150 acres of land.

To put that into perspective, the land they were going to develop on Dan Avenue was just 25 acres.
