JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Firefighters with the Leachville Volunteer Fire Department say they are in need of expansion.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Drake Brown, the department has been working on building a new substation for at least a couple of years.

"We're working on a Leachville Fire Department substation," Brown said. "We're trying to build that on the south end of town. Trying to provide better coverage for the citizens on the south end of our fire district."

He says that there are about 50 to 100 homes in that area and by having a substation, they will be able to cover them better.

"Right now we're in the north end of the fire district," Brown said. "While we're centrally located in the middle of town, it's not all that central in the middle of the fire district. We cover a lot of ground on the south end of the district. We go a long way south."

Brown said an additional substation will also lower insurance ratings.

"For the home owners, for one thing it's going to lower their insurance rating," Brown said. "It's going save them money on insurance. And it's going to make it easier for us to provide coverage and easier to access the properties on the south end of the district."

According to Brown, the fire department has already purchased an acre of ground located north of Highway 18 by Helena Chemical Company in hopes of the substation.

"We're looking at a 35 by 60 by 16 fire station," Brown said. "It's going to be three bays. We don't have enough equipment to fill three bays right now, but we're looking to expand in the future. The total project cost is going to be anywhere from $120,000 to $140,000."

The next step is to raise the necessary funds to complete the project.

"We're all up for donations and anything we can get will help," Brown said. "Please express your support for the Leachville Fire Department to local representatives. We're here to serve them and that's what it's about. And just knowing they're behind us helps a lot."

Brown said the past two years have been slow moving, but he and fellow firefighters are determined to serve the community in the best way they can.
