MCDOUGAL, AR (KAIT) -

Two Clay County women face multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after the sheriff said they broke into a truck, stole a gun and led a deputy on a high-speed chase with a baby in the backseat.

It all started, according to Sheriff Terry Miller, around 9:22 a.m. Friday at the McDougal One Stop, 147 U.S. Highway 62.

Witnesses told Clay County Dispatch a woman had broken into a truck on the parking lot and stolen a gun.

The woman then got into a white car driven by another woman and sped off.

Miller said a “concerned citizen” followed the women.

When the car stopped, the driver got out and the other woman drove away.

A deputy went to the location where the concerned citizen was with the woman and retrieved the stolen gun, the sheriff said.

Meanwhile, another deputy spotted the white car “driving at a high rate of speed on CR 311 and tried to initiate a traffic stop,” Miller said.

The vehicle turned into a driveway on Elmwood. The driver jumped out of the car and “ran on foot toward a trailer, ignoring numerous commands from the deputy to stop and get on the ground,” Miller said.

The deputy followed the woman into the residence and arrested her.

When deputies searched the woman’s vehicle, Miller said they found a baby in a car seat in the backseat.

He said they also found two "corner-cut baggies" containing suspected methamphetamine, a set of digital scales and a hand-rolled cigarette containing suspected marijuana.

Deputies arrested Tiffany Howell, 23, of McDougal on suspicion of the following:

  • Breaking or entering-two counts
  • Theft of property-felony and misdemeanor
  • Possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) with intent to deliver
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

She is being held at the Clay County Detention Center in lieu of a $20,000 cash-only bond.

Deputies also arrested and charged Debra Baggett, 59, of McDougal with the following:

  • Breaking and entering-two counts
  • Theft of property-felony and misdemeanor

She is also being held at the CCDC in lieu of a $10,000 cash-only bond.
