HARRISBURG, AR (KAIT) -

The Harrisburg community is in mourning after they lost one of their own.

Katy Hutchison, 79, passed away last Friday.

She worked at the Play School Daycare Center where she left a memorable legacy.

Children, staff, and community members knew her as Mrs. Katy.

She once owned a tire shop where the daycare now stands.

She sold the building to the city many years ago but the director of the daycare, Donna Massengill, said she refused to say goodbye for good.

“She would say that she came with the building,” Massengill said. “But I'm going to tell you, it was a blessing that she came with the building.”

Mrs. Katy worked 24 years and left a legacy no one will forget, especially the students who loved her most.

“I feel sad that she can't come in here and give us hugs anymore because she died,” Makenzie Burchfield said of her beloved teacher.

Burchfield said she will miss the hugs, but she will never forget the good times.

“There was a lot of fun stuff we did with her,” Burchfield said. “She would even play with us sometimes.”

Massengill said picking up the pieces and moving forward seems nearly impossible.

“We can't live without her,” Massengill said. “I mean you can’t replace her. This job position will not be filled anytime soon.”

Mrs. Katy’s family set up a memorial fund in her honor.

Massengill said Hutchison always worried about the safety of the kids during bad weather, so the proceeds from the funds will go toward installing a storm shelter at the daycare.

“That would probably be her proudest moment to know that is going to be built,” Massengill said.

Anyone who wants to donate to the memorial fund can drop off donations at Harrisburg First National Bank, 201 East Jackson Street. Their phone number is (870) 578-2472.
