LAWRENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

Lawrence County Quorum Court is looking to put the Hoxie Fire Department in charge of the southeast portion of the county.

The Egypt Fire Protection District previously covered this area, however the Egypt district has been inactive since 2006.

The Egypt mayor said the Bono and Cash Fire Departments have since taken over the areas Egypt used to cover.

Lawrence County wants one of their departments to take control of the portion that is in their county.

The county attorney told the quorum court he is working with Craighead County to see who is in charge of what area.

He said they can work on making an ordinance for Hoxie Fire Department to take control of the Lawrence County portion.

Lawrence County Office of Emergency Management Director Buddy Williams said public meetings will also be held regarding the issues.

“What we will have to do is hold public meetings by state law and then we will put an ordinance in front of the quorum court,” Williams said. “That ordinance will in fact turn that district back over to Hoxie, the Lawrence County part of it.”

Williams said they are working to resolve the issue so each department is assigned the correct area and has the right resources to keep people safe.

The court tabled the discussion until an ordinance is drawn up.
