JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A Region 8 shopping center that has been mainly vacant over the years may soon be thriving with businesses.

Crews are working to redevelop the Valley View Shopping Center

A new bypass is coming sometime this year.

Jerry Halsey with Halsey, Thrasher and Harpole said the bypass makes this the right time to bring business to the Valley View area.

Jana Chinander said she is excited to see something happening at the shopping center that has simply sat there for so long.

"I am glad that we are finally getting it fixed up," Chinander said. "I am hoping we will get some tenants because I really don't care to have it empty because you never know when there is riffraff and stuff going to come in there."

Chinander also said having stores near Valley View like the current Dollar General is convenient for residents in the area.

"If you have grandkids over or have last minute something you need so it's nice to just run down the street instead of going all the way to Walmart across town," Chinander said.

Halsey said crews should be done working on the exterior by May 1.

They will finish landscaping and signage by mid-summer.

Halsey said they have had a few businesses already sign leases for the center.

He said they hope to fill the center with restaurants, maybe a medical clinic and other stores.

Halsey did say bingo that is currently in that center will be staying as well.
