Pope John Paul Dies at 84

April 2, 2005--Posted at 1:45 p.m. CST

VATICAN CITY--Pope John Paul has died in his Vatican apartment. Vatican T-V said, ``the angels welcome you,'' after the announcement from the papal spokesman.

The first Polish pope in history was 84 and had led the world's Roman Catholics since 1978. The announcement of Pope John Paul's death came just two hours after the Vatican announced that he had developed a high fever. It was just two days ago that the Vatican revealed that John Paul had developed complications from a urinary tract infection on the heels of the flu and breathing problems.

The Vatican's number-two official led a tearful crowd of 70-thousand people in St. Peter's Square in prayers after word came that the pope had died. Some cried uncontrollably. A Mass will be held in St. Peter's Square Sunday morning.
