Patients evacuated from hospital after lightning strike

OSCEOLA, AR (KAIT) - Storms reportedly caused a fire on a hospital campus.

Osceola fire crews responded to SMC Regional Medical Center for a fire in an electrical building at the hospital just before 3 a.m. Thursday.

According to Mississippi County Hospital System COO Chris Raymer, the main power distribution to the hospital was hit by lightning.

Power was cut to the hospital because of the fire. No injuries have been reported.

Raymer says fire crews aided in evacuating 14 patients to a Blytheville hospital.

Some hospital operations, including the emergency room, were back up and running later Thursday morning.

The remaining parts of the hospital should be powered up by 5 p.m. Thursday, according to Raymer.

He says the evacuated patients will be moved back to Osceola on Friday.
