Parkin Police Department closed, Cross Co. takes over duties

PARKIN, AR (KAIT) - A Region 8 town is without its own police force tonight.

Cross County Sheriff J.R. Smith told Region 8 News that his department will take over the duties in Parkin. He said that change is effective immediately.

The former Parkin Chief of Police, Charles Wilson, said the letter his department received from Mayor Willie Patterson Thursday cited lack of funding for the reason they closed.

Wilson said there were ten officers and four dispatchers who are now without a job.

Mayor Patterson spoke to Region 8 News Thursday night but said he could not speak on the matter.

He only said the city was "struggling" and the department was closed "indefinitely."
