JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Craighead County sheriff's deputies say a fight over money led to a man shooting his roommate's dog, but the man said he was just "celebrating" his birthday.
Deputies arrested 54-year-old Ralph C. Meade on suspicion of aggravated assault and aggravated cruelty to a dog, cat or horse.
The shooting happened around 2:30 Friday morning in the 100-block of County Road 742, according to the initial incident report.
Meade's roommate told deputies Meade came into his room early Friday morning with a gun and demanded money.
After the men exchanged words, the victim said Meade shot his dog in the left shoulder and the chest.
When deputies asked Meade what happened, he reportedly said he and the victim were "good friends" and he wanted to "party and have drinks because it was his [Meade's] birthday."
Meade said they argued because the victim had received some money and had not paid his rent.
The disturbance awoke Sandra J. Henley, 50, who was asleep in another room.
She told deputies she went to see what was happening and saw Meade with a gun in his hand.
Henley reportedly said Meade fired the weapon inside the house.
She also told deputies that the victim gave Meade some money during the altercation.
When deputies asked Meade if he had a gun, he reportedly admitted he had a Smith and Wesson .357 revolver and allowed the deputies to collect it.
He told the deputies he had been "celebrating his birthday and shot the gun all over the house." He also stated he had shot "bottle rockets in the house."
He denied shooting the victim's dog.
Inside the house, deputies reported finding blood in the room where the victim alleged the dog had been shot, as well as a trail of blood on the floor.
Deputies arrested Meade and took him to the Craighead County Detention Center.
Deputies also arrested Henley for an unrelated misdemeanor warrant out of Jonesboro.
