SAN DIEGO, CA - During a trip to San Diego, Jonesboro High School teacher Faith Reeves reunited with one of her former students.
According to WSIL-TV, Reeves met up with former student Jay Bowman at a Marine Corps boot camp Tuesday while on a trip with other teachers from Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois.
Reeves told WSIL she remembered Bowman as an artistic student, who had to be reminded he was in English class.
"Very music-minded, very artistic-minded," Reeves said. "We had to re-focus a few times and he did. He didn't love it, but he made do."
Bowman's love of music led him to join the Marine Corps band. He said he discovered it by accident.
"I was actually on YouTube and saw a video of the MEOP program, the Musician Enlistment Option Program, and I saw and I was like, 'I'm gonna do that,'" Bowman said.
Bowman said the Corps made him a better person.
"I just want to be a better musician, just a better person in general and just see where I go," Bowman said.
His former teacher agreed.
"You don't know how proud I am of him because he succeeded. He's found a place where he is happy. He's found a place where he is flourishing," Reeves said. "To me that's the greatest. He has his future, he has his opportunities, I'm just thrilled."
