JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Student athletes went for the gold in honor of courage, fitness and joy.
The Area 7 Special Olympics track and field games were Friday at the Jonesboro High School track.
Athletes from Craighead and Poinsett County schools joined area law enforcement to light the torch and compete in a number of events.
While it is a great time for the students, it is a dream come true for parents as well.
Jerri Perez's 16-year-old daughter has competed in Special Olympics for years, and Perez said everyone lights up on game day.
"It's just, getting to see all the kids out here having fun, enjoying themselves, and no matter what they win," Perez said.
The track and field games are just some of the many games local law enforcement help raise money for throughout the year.
Officer Brian Arnold with the Jonesboro Police Department said they organize games all year long from bowling to flag football.
Arnold said these games get the student athletes ready to compete in the state competition in Searcy.
