STEELE, MO (KAIT) -

A Steele man suspected to be under the influence of bath salts assaulted an officer and others.

It happened Friday at a Food Giant grocery store, according to a Steele Police Department news release.

The 35-year-old man, Sammy Chandler, reportedly assaulted a store employee; however, they were not injured.

Police arrived at the grocery store and had to “physically subdue the irate man.”

Chandler was taken to the police department. There, he started fighting with an officer.

The report stated an ambulance came to the police department and took Chandler to Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital, after police were concerned about his well-being.

At the hospital, Chandler reportedly “became violent and attempted to attack nursing staff.”

Police, again, subdued Chandler.

That is when Chandler reportedly bit an officer, injuring him.

After being released from the hospital, Chandler was transported to the Pemiscot County Jail.

Police filed a report with the Pemiscot County prosecuting attorney.

A warrant was issued for Chandler. He was charged with second degree assault on a law enforcement officer.

The report stated additional charges were filed concerning the assault on the Food Giant employee.
