MARKED TREE, AR (KAIT) -

After a long battle to keep the Carver Gym in Marked Tree standing, the city finally decided to just give the building away.

On Monday, Mayor Mary Ann Arnold told Region 8 News the city does not have the funds to restore the gym and that they're looking for a person who wants to take over the building.

Arnold said there have been people who have shown interest in receiving the gym, but there are some residents who are still opposed.

Gregory Tribble, a man born and raised across the street from the gym, said the city's decision will only affect the kids.

“Our kids have nothing,” said Tribble. “What are they going to do? They have nothing to do but stand on the corners and hang out in spots they shouldn't hang out in at all. If we had this gym, they'd have a lot to do, play basketball.”

Mayor Arnold said people who are interested in the building can go before the city council on June 1 with a plan on what they will want to do with the gym.
