Officers on administrative leave after in-custody death

BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) - The Arkansas State Police are investigating and two officers are on administrative leave after a man died while in police custody Monday.

According to a press release from the Batesville Police Department, officers were dispatched to a home in the 900-block of Bayou Street around 1:16 a.m. to assist Vital Link EMS with an overdose patient.

Officer Tommy Harper arrived before Vital Link and made contact with the man.

Harper said he was acting aggressive and said he had eaten an "illegal controlled substance," according to the release.

Vital Link arrived on scene and decided they could not transfer the man because of his aggression.

Officer Harper and Officer Jeremy Gamso handcuffed the man after a brief struggle. The man then became unresponsive.

Vital Link personnel began medical treatment and took the man to White River Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:05 a.m.

ASP was notified and sent two investigators to conduct an independent investigation into the incident.

The two officers are now on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
