Arrest made in Newport murder

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - Newport police made an arrest in a murder case from the weekend.

According to Detective Patrick Weatherford, Andwelle Ellis, 18, of Newport was arrested Tuesday.

Ellis was captured in Batesville. The Batesville Police Department and the United States Marshall Service assisted in finding him.

He will appear in Jackson County District Court on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

In a press release from the Newport Police Department, they said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests made be made.

Ellis is arrested in connection to the shooting death of 30-year-old Vanessa Thomas Friday night.

The preliminary investigation shows that Thomas was a passenger in a car traveling in the Hout Circle area around 11:30 p.m.

Shots were fired at the vehicle and Thomas was struck several times.

The driver of the car took Thomas to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
