Blytheville man arrested after standoff with police

BLYTHEVILLE, AR (KAIT) - A Blytheville man was arrested early Tuesday morning after barricading himself in his home and threatening officers.

According to Captain Scott Adams with the Blytheville Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call in the 900-block of East Main Street around 12 a.m.

A woman told police her husband would not let her leave the house and he had assaulted her.

When officers arrived on scene, the husband, later identified as 56-year-old Verley Brown, would not let officers check on the woman.

Brown was "belligerent" and threatened to shoot officers if they did not leave his property, according to the release.

Officers secured the scene and established a safe perimeter until they could obtain warrants.

Police tried to talk to Brown several times in an attempt to get him to surrender.

The Special Response Team was also activated.

Brown surrendered himself after a four and a half hour standoff.

The woman had cuts on her and said Brown held a knife to her throat.

He was taken to the Mississippi County Sheriff's Department to await arraignment.

Brown is charged with aggravated assault on a family or household member and third degree domestic battery.

He appeared in Blytheville District Court where his bond was set at $15,000. He will appear in court again on May 31.
