JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Jonesboro police are down three more officers, bringing the total of openings on the force to 16.

According to Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott, that number does not include those on sick, military or family leave either.

At Tuesday night's Jonesboro City Council meeting, Chief Elliott addressed questions related to an "A Better Region 8" editorial about police pay in Jonesboro.

Chief Elliott said the three most recent officers to hand in their resignation letter are headed to the Arkansas State Police.

In May, the police department will host their second police academy in an effort to get new officers on the street faster.

Chief Elliott said they'll be testing again for new recruits next month.
