Jonesboro, AR -- Lauren Payne Reports

New Skatepark In Early Stages Of Planning

April 06, 2005 -- Posted at 10:30 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO -- Plans for a new skate park here in Jonesboro are in the works; however, many questions are still unanswered.

One question, will the current park be redesigned or even moved, and if so, where?

"That site is still a possibility, we are not ruling that out. We prefer, and I think several other people in Jonesboro prefer it be in a separate location," said Director of Parks and Recreation, Jason Wilke.

Another unanswered question is, who will fund the new park?

"Whether the city is going to come up with some of the money, private citizens, or organizations. We're trying to put all those numbers together to come up with the funding," said Wilke.

There's one thing they are not wasting any time on......the planning and designing for this skate park.

Wednesday afternoon, a skate park planning and design team answered questions and got feedback from the park's most frequent users......

"Something that's versatile for skateboarders, rollerbladers, and bike riders alike -- something that can be challenging for advanced people as well as beginners," said one skatepark user.

Aaron Richardson is on the Skatepark Committee here in Jonesboro.

This group is ready to get the wheels rolling.

"If we can get something nailed down by the time school is out--it shouldn't take very long to get it built--hopefully the kids will have a place to go this summer," said Richardson.
