LAWRENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

Part of Highway 63 was shut down in Lawrence County early Sunday morning after a semi struck a bridge.

According to Lawrence County Office of Emergency Management Director Buddy Williams, the truck was driving north on Highway 63 near Portia when it crossed the centerline and struck the south side of a bridge.

It happened around 4:20 a.m.

The Office of Emergency Management Service was called to the scene because diesel was leaking from the truck.

Williams said about 50 gallons of diesel was spilled.

The used sand to soak up the fuel. Crews then removed the sand from the highway later Sunday morning.

There were no injuries in the crash and the bridge was not damaged.

The Portia Volunteer Fire Department, the Walnut Ridge Fire Department Hazmat Team and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office all helped with the cleanup.

The road was opened back up around 6:30 a.m., once the fuel was cleaned up and the truck was removed.

Crews were still out working to clean underneath the bridge at 12 p.m. Sunday.
