JONESBORO, Ark. (4/25/16) – Arkansas State infielder/catcher Joe Schrimpf has been named the Sun Belt Conference Community Coffee Student-Athlete of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.
Schrimpf, a native of St. Louis, Mo., helped lead the Red Wolves to a 4-0 week and first sweep in a SBC series since last season after A-State defeated Southern Illinois 7-1 in the midweek and took three in a row from ULM this past weekend.
The junior was fantastic at the plate for the team as he had two hits in each game and collected three extra-base hits, including his fifth home run of the season Saturday, which is second best on the squad. He was 8-for-17 (.471 average) and led the team with six runs scored over the four games, including the game-winning run in Sunday’s 5-4 walk-off win over the Warhawks.
Schrimpf led A-State with a .550 on-base percentage and a .824 slugging percentage during the week and drove in five runs. He also added a double and triple in Sunday’s series finale. For the season, he is hitting .305 and is the team’s leader in RBIs (35), slugging percentage (.496), on-base percentage (.437), walks (28), and sacrifice bunts (7).
Arkansas State, currently on a season-high four-game winning streak, is scheduled to play host to UAPB Tuesday, April 26 in a midweek contest. First pitch from Tomlinson Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
