A-State Men's Golf Advances to SBC Championship Match Play

MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. (4/26/16) – The Arkansas State men's golf team completed stroke play Tuesday at the Sun Belt Conference Championship in third place among 11 teams, securing one of four spots in the tournament's new match play format to determine the team champion and automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

The top four teams in the 54-hole competition played over the last three days will now participate in tomorrow's match play championship.  The top and fourth seeds will face each other beginning on the No. 1 tee, while the second and third seeds will play starting on the No. 10 tee at 7:30 a.m.

A-State recorded a combined 855 score in stroke play to earn the No. 3 seed and will matchup against No. 2 Troy, which placed second with an 854.  The victor will then take on the winner between No. 1 Georgia State and No. 4 South Alabama later that day.  The Panthers and Jaguars shot an 848 and 862, respectively, for the initial three rounds.

Arkansas State entered today's third round in second place after posting a 289 Sunday and a 278 yesterday, which was the lowest round of the tourney by any team.   The squad came back to post a 288 today as it dropped one spot in the standings.

The Red Wolves were led by four players who finished among the top-25 individuals, including sophomores Tanner Napier and Andrew Huseman in a tie for fourth place with a 212.  Senior Oswin Schlenkrich took seventh place with a combined 213, while fellow senior Seth Garner placed tied for 24th with a 220.  Also competing for A-State, freshman Joel Wendin shot a 230 to finish 49th.

Huseman and Napier were responsible for the best finish by an A-State player at the Sun Belt Conference Championship since Lloyd du Preez placed tied for third in 2011.  Napier collected his second-best finish of the season, while Huseman put together his sixth top-five showing this year.
