JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A weekend event sets sights on helping youth develop as leaders and get outdoors.
The Optimist Club of Jonesboro hosts its annual fishing derby Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. until noon.
It is at Craighead Forest Park in Jonesboro and is a free event for children 15 and under.
The Optimist Club is an organization that focuses on youth development and service.
The club members also raise money to help charities such as Miracle League, Camp Quality and host the Youth Appreciation Banquet.
Children can register the day of the event, and the club encourages families to bring their own fishing rods.
The Optimist Club will have some fishing rods on site for those who do not bring one.
Barry Clayton, a volunteer, said his favorite part of the event is the kids.
"The look on their face because a lot of kids come out and they've not done this before or haven't caught a big fish," Clayton said. "We've even caught turtles in the past."
The fishing derby will go on rain or shine Saturday.
There will be prizes including new fishing poles and tackle boxes.
