Students design hydrant map for fire department

EAST Hydrant Mapping

MONETTE, AR (KAIT) - Two EAST students at Buffalo Island Central in Monette created a mobile map that will help the Leachville Fire Department.

Jayden Fowler and Tyler Morris took it upon themselves to make a map with the location of every fire hydrant in the town.

The map will allow firefighters to know exactly where a hydrant stands when running on a call

The two students went out and accurately marked all 73 hydrants.

Then, one by one, they marked them on a mapping system online.

They transferred that to an app so that the firefighters have easy mobile access.

Fowler said the fire department needed this.

He said the department told them one time they went on a call and missed a hydrant, which took a longer response time.

"There were fire hydrants on that road, which would have been a lot quicker," Fowler said. "It could've helped put the fire out a lot quicker, but instead, they didn't know it was there, so they had to go all the way back to town."

Both Fowler and Morris said having the map on the app will be much more efficient.

"The map they have now is too large to take with them on calls," Fowler said. "All they have to do with this app is pull it up on their phones and they'll know it is right there. It shows their current location and then the red dots on the screen are the fire hydrants."

Morris said they plan to add more features to the map that include the rate of flow and how big the valve size is for the hose.

They also want to add hydrants from surrounding towns to the map in the future.
