Contractor accused of taking $9K, not performing work

BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - A contractor hired to build a deck for an Arkansas couple was arrested after authorities say he took the money, but never built the deck.

According to the Baxter County Sheriff's Office, 32-year-old Paul Gardner of Springfield, MO is charged with theft of property.

In a news release, Sheriff John Montgomery said the couple hired Gardner to build the deck after he previously worked as a sub-contractor on the couple's home to install log siding.

Montgomery said the victims contracted Gardner separately to build a deck on their home in June 2015.

The original invoice was for $12,450. The victims paid $9,750 down toward the project.

In September 2015, the victims said Gardner came to their home and worked for four hours.

That was all the work investigators said Gardner did on the project.

The victims said Gardner never returned any of the $9,750 they paid.

On February 9, 2016, a judge issued a bench warrant for Gardner.

Sheriff's deputies booked him into the Baxter County Detention Center on Wednesday.

Gardner is set to appear in court on Friday.
