Iraq Finally Open to American Rice

APRIL 8, 2005 - Posted at 11:01 a.m. CDT

WASHINGTON - After more than a year of trying, U.S. rice growers are finally selling rice to Iraq.

The Agriculture Department says Iraq has purchased more than 60,000 metric tons of U.S. rice, a sale worth up to $19 million.  Iraq was once the number one market for U.S. rice.

U.S. rice growers had been upset at losing sales to other countries, especially when Iraq bought rice from Vietnam, which did not belong to the U.S.-led coalition.

Republican Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson of Missouri and other farm-state lawmakers reprimanded the White House last year, while the coalition was still in charge.

Emerson said she was "obnoxious" about the issue every chance she had.
