A Better Region 8 editorials aim to shed light on subjects that are already making things better and to get all of us to have conversations about things that need improvement.
Recently we focused on the issue of pay for Jonesboro police officers.
Based on the feedback we've received, lots of people are having conversations.
One example is from Larry, who said: "Kudos concerning calling out Mayor Perrin on pay for police officers. Our tax rates are high and the city should support our first responders."
But, we welcome disagreement and respectful debate.
During a follow-up editorial where we talked about the JPD chief being blindsided by the recent city hall "park-in," Amanda messaged us on Facebook and said, "How can you possibly say that the LEO missed an opportunity to communicate. The chief WAS notified in advance….albeit was too late for him to stop it."
Amanda went on to say: "Usually your comments made on a Better Region 8 are very good and unbiased. I feel this was very biased and one-sided. Did YOU talk to any of the officers? Or did you just take the mayor and chief's word for it? If so, shame on you. I have always believed that the news reported both sides...guess I was wrong."
That's a good point.
An editorial is not considered news coverage. It is an expression of opinion and therefore can show a bias. Now that Amanda reached out with so much passion, both sides of the argument have been heard and I applaud her for standing up and sharing her opinion.
And that's what it's all about.
Let us know how you feel about this or any other subject at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Working hard to give all opinions a voice and most of all having conversations aimed at solving problems, makes this A Better Region 8.
