House Approves Money for ASU-Mountain Home

APRIL 8, 2005 - Posted at 4:49 p.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The House briefly tied up the budget for Arkansas State University at Mountain Home today but eventually approved money for the campus for the next two years.

The school recently withdrew an invitation to David Corn, an editor of the liberal periodical "The Nation."  Corn has since written in a column that he hopes the cancellation spawns controversy.  He also wrote that he was eager to visit the heart of a state President Bush carried twice in the hope of spurring greater discussion.

Republican Representative Johnny Key of Mountain Home says the school had the right to cancel Corn's appearance because the school didn't like what Corn has "been saying up in the northeast part of the country."

Democratic Representative Steve Harrelson of Texarkana criticized the university, which initially prompted the budget to be put on hold.
