Eight run eighth inning seals win for Lyon

HENDERSON, Tenn. – With a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning, the fourth-seeded Lyon baseball team exploded for eight runs in the same inning and sprinted past No. 5 seed Park University in the first round of the American Midwest Conference Tournament, 12-5 at Carnes Field Wednesday evening. The Scots now advance to the second round and will play top-seeded Missouri Baptist University Thursday, at 5 p.m.

Kris Kohlstedt had a team high three hits – finishing 3-for-5, while Jordan Braswell and Alex Miles had two hits, each going 2-for-4. Logan Reddick and Dylan Wooten added one as each of them, along with Braswell hit home runs in the game.

With the win, Lyon is now 29-22 overall, while Park falls to 26-20 on the season. Earlier in the day, No. 1 seed Missouri Baptist (40-11) defeated No. 8 seed Lindenwood University-Belleville (16-39) 10-3. The first four innings featured both teams trading punches. Park scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning, but Lyon countered after Reddick hit a two-run home run to left field in the second inning. Park then regained the lead in the bottom half on an error by the Scots. With the Scots facing a 3-2 deficit, they once again tied the game when Braswell hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning to tie the game at three.

Tognarine and the Lyon defense were then able to shut down the Pirates for the next five innings. Park's bullpen also escaped pitching scoreless frames to keep the game at a stalemate.

The eighth inning would prove to be the difference in the game. The Scots scored four of their eight runs off walks and hit by pitches by Park. Miles and Kohlstedt also combined for a pair of two-RBI singles to add insurance runs for Lyon. With an 11-3 lead in the ninth inning, Wooten stepped up to the plate and belted a solo home run to left-center field to give the Scots a 12-3 lead.

Ryan Lewis came in for relief of Tognarine in the ninth inning as Park added a pair of runs, but it was not enough to combat the high-powered Scots offense in the end.

Lyon will be the home team Thursday at Carnes Field and host No. 1 seed Missouri Baptist Thursday at 5 p.m. If the Scots win, they will then play the winner of No. 2 seed Freed-Hardeman and No. 3 seed Central Baptist on Friday at 5 p.m. If the Scots lose, they would then await the winner of No. 6 seed Williams Baptist and No. 7 seed William Woods, Friday at 2 p.m.
