Watershed Project Considered for Bayou Meto

APRIL 11, 2005 - Posted at 8:10 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Flooding in the Bayou Meto watershed would be eased and Arkansas farmers and waterfowl would get releif under a new irrigation project slated for the area.  The Bayou Meto Basin Project is a joint partnership between the Bayou Meto Water Management District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The new project would affect about 864,000 acres and provide irrigation water for 265,000 acres of cropland.  Supporters say that would reduce pressure on the alluvial aquifer and would benefit the 32,000-acre Bayou Meto Wildlife Management Area, known for its duck hunting.
