Black Oak man loses money to scam

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Craighead County Sheriff's Department is investigating a scam after a Black Oak man lost $1,000 trying to claim a prize from Publisher's Clearing House.

According to an incident report, the man said he got a call Friday around 10 p.m. from a man saying he was with the company.

He was told he won a prize, but had to send money in for taxes first.

The 65-year-old man said he was asked to send three payments to the company and then he would get a check back for a larger amount.

Two payments were for $500 and the third was for $950.

The man told police the caller had him confused so he went to transfer the money.

He later realized it was a scam and tried to get the money back.

The incident report states he was able to get the $950 payment back, but could not recover the other two money transfers.

He kept getting phone calls from the suspect about the money, so he had to get his number changed.
