JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - One of Jonesboro's busiest streets is currently undergoing renovation.
Work began Tuesday along Caraway Road to create new sidewalk access.
One northbound lane of Caraway will be closed periodically during construction.
When completed, a half-mile of sidewalk will connect the access from Nettleton Avenue to the JET Regional Transfer Center north of East Matthews Avenue.
"It's going to really give us much better access into our transit center," JET Transit Coordinator Steve Ewart said. "There are apartments along Stallings Lane and Tony Drive and businesses on Stone Street and it's going to give them better access to our facility."
Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin said this is part of the city's overall goal to add sidewalks in neighborhoods all around the town.
"The Jonesboro of the future will be safely accessible for pedestrians as well as vehicle traffic," Perrin said.
According to Perrin, the total cost is expected to be around $323,000.
Work is expected to be complete by early August.
