WASHINGTON - A southeast Missouri soldier is among 18 people to die in last Wednesday's crash of a military helicopter in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon says Army Staff Sergeant Charles Sanders, Jr. of Charleston was killed when the CH47 Chinook crashed 80 miles south of the Afghan capital of Kabul.

Sanders was 29 years old.

Fifteen U.S. service members and three civilian contractors died when the helicopter went down.

It was the deadliest crash for Americans since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.
