WEINER, AR (KAIT) -

A group of Region 8 senior citizens took home a state championship trophy over the weekend.

The Senior Cardinal Beanbag team from Weiner competed in the Beanbag Baseball State Tournament over the weekend in Jacksonville.

Nineteen teams competed in the seventh annual tournament.

This was the Cardinals' second year to compete.

Beyond taking home the trophy and bragging rights, members of the team said it is much more than that.

Linda Walker, team member, said beanbag baseball has been great for fellowship and exercise.

They get together weekly for potluck and practice at the First Christian Church in Weiner.

Walker said they have an 83-year-old who plays on the team and she expresses often how beanbag baseball allows her to stay active and keeps her from getting stuck inside her house.

Four Region 8 teams including the Weiner Senior Cardinals, Jonesboro Primetimers, Harrisburg and Bono teams competed at state after moving on from the regional tournament
