Suspect in SeMo Trooper's Death Seeks Public Defender

APRIL 12, 2005 - Posted at 2:40 p.m. CDT

VAN BUREN, MO - The man charged with gunning down a Highway Patrol trooper in southeast Missouri was in a Carter County courtroom in Van Buren this morning.

Lance Shockley is facing first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of Sergeant Dewayne Graham outside his home.

He applied for a public defender this morning.  Troopers say Shockley was being investigated for his involvement in a fatal crash last year before Graham's slaying.

He'll be back in court on May 10.
