Suspect admits to molesting child while her mom drove

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Police say a Jonesboro man sexually assaulted a young girl in the backseat of a car while her mom drove.

Craighead County Judge Keith Blackman found probable cause Wednesday to charge Charles Elwood Morris, 28, with sexual indecency with a child.

According to court documents, on March 30 the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division contacted the Jonesboro Police Department concerning a 14-year-old girl being "sexually assaulted" by Morris.

The child told investigators Morris put his hand down her pants and touched her.

Upon learning of the allegations, the girl's mother confronted Morris. She told investigators Morris "apologized to her and admitted to touching the juvenile."

During an interview with Jonesboro detectives, Morris reportedly claimed he and the girl had been "flirting" with each other the night of the assault.

He said they "touched each other in the back seat of a vehicle as the juvenile's mother and cousin were in the front seats," the affidavit stated.

Although he claimed it was mutual contact, Morris reportedly told detectives he knew the girl was 14 and that "it was wrong."

After finding probable cause to charge him, Blackman set Morris's bond at $3,500 and set a June 28 appearance in circuit court.

The judge also issued a no-contact order between Morris and the victim.
