Rain Getting in the Way of Arkansas Rice Planting

APRIL 12, 2005 - Posted at 4:19 p.m. CDT

STUTTGART, AR - Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service agents say recent rains have hampered rice planting in parts of the state.

Extension Agent Van Dawson of Arkansas County says planting cannot take place if the soil is too wet.  If it rains more this week, farmers who want their crops in early may have to think again.

Agents say some rice can be planted as late as June, so growers do not appear to be in the position of having to make alternate plans.
