Jonesboro, AR (A-State) – The Arkansas State baseball team claimed the eighth seed in the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Tournament and will face the top seed, Louisiana-Lafayette, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25 at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos, Texas.
The Red Wolves finished the regular season with a 27-27 overall mark and 13-17 record in league play, which was a full three games ahead of both Georgia State and ULM, who finished at 10-20.
Louisiana-Lafayette is currently ranked as high as No. 19 in the national polls and finished 37-19 overall with a 21-9 record in league play. South Alabama also concluded the regular season with a 21-9 SBC mark and is co-champions of the conference with ULL, but the Ragin’ Cajuns earned the top seed in the tournament due to winning two out of three games against the Jaguars earlier this year.
The winner of Wednesday’s first-round matchup between the Red Wolves and Ragin’ Cajuns will face the winner of No. 4 Troy and No. 5 Texas State, while the loser will play the loser of that game. Troy and the host Bobcats will square off at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The other side of the bracket features No. 3 Little Rock taking on No. 6 Georgia Southern at 9 a.m., while No. 2 South Alabama will face No. 7 UT Arlington at 12:30 p.m.
This marks A-State’s seventh consecutive year in the conference tournament and the Red Wolves are the only team in the league to post at least two wins in each year of the event over the six-year time span. This tournament field marks the first time since 2010 that all eight seeds have .500 or better overall winning percentages.
