Sheriff: 'Free' Medicare offer just a scam

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - If a man calls offering free items from Medicare, Craighead County Sheriff Marty Boyd says, "Hang up."

A man claiming to be with Medicare is calling citizens, offering “free” items including a back brace.

The caller just asks that victims send him a money order for $19.95.

“This guy doesn’t take no for an answer and will start talking rough and threaten to stop your Medicare benefits,” Boyd stated in a news release.

To avoid becoming a victim of this phone scam, the sheriff says remember:

  • It’s not free if you have to send someone money.
  • Government agencies will not call you and offer free items.
  • Never give personal information over the telephone.
  • If you doubt the authenticity of the call, hang up.
  • When a caller becomes belligerent, hang up.
