JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Several bike riders took off from Jonesboro Friday to help fund the DARE program in Jonesboro.

The riders raise money to participate in a three-day bike event.

Friday afternoon, the riders loaded into a van to head to Junction City, Louisiana.

Once they make it to Louisiana, the riders will hop on their bikes and ride back to Jonesboro.

"We ride 300 plus miles and it has been a four-day event up until this year when we cut it back to three days, so they are riding a little bit longer each day this year," DARE officer Greg Lawson said.

Lawson said this is the sixth year for the event.

"It is fun and of course everyone dreads it at first because they think 'I don't know if I will be able to do this this year,' but no one has really had any problems," Lawson said.

This year two riders raised over $4,000 for the DARE program.

Lawson said the event helps make DARE possible in Jonesboro.

"I want to thank the people who are riding because if it weren't for them and raising the money that they do to fund our program, I am not sure our program would even exist," Lawson said.

There is also a 2nd event in September where riders bike to Junction City in one day.
