JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Arkansas State University held the official groundbreaking for two new on-campus housing facilities Wednesday afternoon.

Work is underway right now on campus to clear the land for those projects.

New undergraduate housing will be located along University Loop near Arkansas Hall.

New graduate housing will be located off of Aggie Road near the ROTC building.

In total, the project adds more than 500 beds for campus housing.

Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Dr. Rick Stripling said these housing facilities will have nice amenities.

"There will be two and four bedroom units," Dr. Stripling said. "You'll have your own bedroom, your own walk-in closets, and your own bathroom. They'll have granite countertops. It's going to be very nice."

This is also the first time that A-State has entered into a public/private partnership.

Zimmer Development is partnering with the college for the housing project.

"This is something that other states are practicing. There's a lot of value in it for us, it's particularly a cost value. It's something that we see a lesser cost that actually gets passed onto the students," Dr. Stripling said.

Zimmer is also constructing the off-campus student housing along Johnson Avenue.
