JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital honored local cancer survivors Sunday, which was National Cancer Survivor's Day.

Several survivors from all around Northeast Arkansas gathered to celebrate and to share their testimonies at the NEA Baptist Fowler Family Center for Cancer Care.

The celebration was open to all cancer survivors regardless of where they got treatment.

A Pocahontas man, diagnosed with lung cancer in October, said NEA has been life changing for him.

Pete Waites, like many others, shared his story to encourage other survivors, reflecting on the day he started his road to recovery.

"The first thing he said was,'Mr. Waites, you're cancer free,'" said Waites, quoting his NEA doctor. "Nobody or no place you can go could be nicer or more professional than they are here at the cancer center in Northeast Arkansas in Jonesboro, Arkansas."

Waites said NEA continues to help him on his path of recovery and also helped some of his loved ones who fought cancer.

"My wife also had cancer," Waites said. "Now, she's cancer free."

National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual event going that has been celebrated nationwide for 29 years.
