FIFTY-SIX, Ark. (AP) - A portion of the Blanchard Springs Recreation Area will be permanently closed because of repeated issues with flooding.
The Ozark-St. Francis National Forests says the lower campground loop at Blanchard Springs will not reopen. The campground is located in Stone County in northern Arkansas. Officials administratively closed the loop on March 21, 2012, after heavy rains submerged the campground and damaged property. No one was hurt.
Officials say repeated flash floods pose a serious risk to campers, staff and first responders. In 2010, 20 people died in flash flooding at the Albert Pike campgrounds in the Ouachita National Forest in southern Arkansas.
