JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - If you drive through downtown Jonesboro in the near future, you will see a change.

Bruce Venable, pastor of First Baptist Church, said the historic hotel building across the street from his church will be demolished.

Their plans are to get rid of it so they have more parking for their church members.

"We do not have enough space for all of our members to park," Venable said.

After hearing about the planned demolition, some people are concerned about losing historic value downtown and worried about the current care center that operates inside the building.

Venable said the building has served its purpose and it's time to move forward.

"It's just in deplorable condition," Venable said. "It's in awful condition. It just needs to come down. It's not safe and nobody stays there. We operate our care center out of it to the best of our ability, but it's very limiting."

An upgraded facility will soon house the care center.

Venable said they will not demolish the hotel building until those plans for the center are finalized.

"The care center will continue to happen," Venable said. "It is our main priority."

He said they are working with the city to approve the plans, then they will know when the building will officially come down.
