Lyon Baseball: Moore, Tognarine earn NAIA Gold Gloves

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Lyon College baseball teammates Easton Moore and Tyler Tognarine have been named to the 2016 Rawlings-NAIA Baseball Gold Glove Team, the national office announced on Tuesday.

Moore and Tognarine are the first teammates to take home the honor in the same season since 2012. Siena Heights University’s (Mich.) Cory Lehman and Corey Alexander were the last teammates to do so. It is also their first-ever gold glove awards.

Moore had an outstanding 2016 season, appearing in a team high 53 games at shortstop. He totalted a .299 batting average, 55 hits, eight doubles, one triple and 20 RBI’s. Moore also posted a .964 fielding percentage, turned a team high 31 double plays and team leading 186 assists (ranked third in the nation).

Tognarine led the pitching staff in several categories including wins (11), complete games (9), shutouts (3), earned run average (3.07), innings pitched (99.2), strikeouts (62) and opponent batting average (.218). His 3.07 ERA also ranked fifth in the American Midwest Conference.

The rest of the Gold Glove team includes Bellevue’s (Neb.) catcher Jake Browne, Cornerstone’s (Mich.) first baseman Zach Bohl, Southeastern’s (Fla.) second baseman Angel Garced, The Masters’ (Calif.) Nick Covello, Lindenwood-Belleville’s (Ill.) Ethan Ruff, Faulkner’s (Ala.) left fielder Alexis Cruz and Concordia’s (Mich.) right fielder Jacob Maas.

Bohl, Garced and Maas received their respective program’s first-ever ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove award.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 8,200 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 73rd annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 5-8, 2017 in Anaheim, California.
