JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - There could be more housing in downtown Jonesboro in the near future.

A conditional use permit to construct townhouses at the corner of East Street and Cate Avenue has been submitted to the Jonesboro Metropolitan Area Planning Commission.

"It's really exciting to have new neighbors in this area," Amanda Viele-Meister said. "The downtown area in particular, they've had a lot of focus on trying to grow it through the years and now finally we're starting to have more of a breakthrough."

Viele-Meister, a stylist at Roman Touch Salon and Spa, said despite the fact that they'll be moving from Cate Avenue back to their original location on Main Street soon, it's still exciting to see growth in the area.

"Eventually we'll have more growth toward this area and more growth means more jobs and that's fantastic," Viele-Meister said. "It's good for all of us, especially those of us that are self-employed and businesses."

The request goes before the Jonesboro Metropolitan Area Planning Commission Tuesday.

If approved, there are plans to put thirteen units on the property. Nine of those townhomes would front East Street. The remaining four would front Cate Avenue.

That's not the only housing project going on downtown.

Work is underway right now to put eleven 2-bedroom apartments on Union Street at the old Massenelli's cleaners building.
