BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

One man died and another was injured during a diving exercise Saturday morning on Lake Norfork near the Quarry Marina.

The Baxter County Sheriff’s Officer was notified around 10:50 a.m. about an unresponsive diver who was transported by the boat to the shore for help.

Baxter County Sheriff’s Deputies, Arkansas Game and Fish Officers, and emergency medical personnel all responded to the scene.

Officers learned during the investigation that a group of divers were undergoing training with diving instructor Todd Reed, 37, of Jonesboro.

The group was about 100 feet under the water when Brian Malone, 46, also from Jonesboro, became confused and began swimming toward the bottom of the lake.

Reed took off after Malone. He swam down 177 feet to retrieve Malone and bring him back to the surface.

Upon arrival at the shore, CPR was performed on Malone, while Reed was airlifted to a facility in Fayetteville to be placed in a decompression chamber.

Malone was transported to a local hospital in Mountain Home, but did not survive.

He was pronounced dead by the Baxter County Coroner at 11:58 a.m.
